St Matthew’s School Soweto’s Thabang ka Mmino music project is a project aimed at enriching students musically. The music project and Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) are now in partnership in terms of all the fundraising events/performances that the children will do. This partnership will also see the JPO offering 8 Tutors, who will be working with the school kids from 2021.

The music project at St. Matthew’s School in Soweto came to our attention as the school was planning to shut the project down, due to lack of funds. St. Matthew’s is a Catholic School in Soweto, that caters to Grade 1 – Grade 12 Learners. They have a great track record of producing very good Matric results, with exceptional performance on STEM subjects.

We offered to assist the school to raise funds in order to ensure the sustainability of the music project, which is an orchestra made up of children from Grade 2 – Grade 12. This is the only opportunity available to the children from this underprivileged township with excessive levels of unemployment to participate in any form of extra-mural activities. The project relies on sponsorships in order to continue to provide the various music instruments required to the children as well as to pay the tutors that teach the children how to read and play music.

Music is crucial in childhood development and more so, learning to play music instruments. This project ensures that the children are occupied and engaged in a constructive way, which helps to prevent them from falling prey to drugs, alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy, etc.

This music project is close to our heart because music is not just about auditory sense, but it also has the following positive benefits:
1) Improves language
2) Improves listening skills
3) Improves focus & memory
4) Improves mathematics skills
5) Improves discipline & teamwork
6) Improves self-confidence & self-esteem
7) Assists with Creativity
8) Relieves stress

The music project performed at the Houghton Golf course in 2018, where they raised approx. R100,000.00 worth of sponsorship to assist with the sustainability of the project.

The music project together with members of the JPO performed at Design Quarter Fourways on Saturday, 12 December 2020 to great enjoyment of restaurant patrons and shoppers that came to view the Market on Main Festive Pop-up and array of stores available at Design Quarter.

St. Matthews School is again raising much needed funds for the music project to continue their good work into 2021.
