On Wednesday 11 December 2019 a bus travelling from Cape Town to Zimbabwe caught alight after a tyre burst. 17 passengers were injured in the incident and all were left distraught as they watched their hard earned belongings burn.
The N1 was closed in both directions and motorists scrambled to avoid delays and traffic. Many motorists chose to illegally exit the highway in the wrong direction to avoid the traffic and make use of the emergency lane.
Emergency services were delayed in attending to the scene as they struggled to get past all the motorists who were using the emergency lane.
Johannesburg Emergency Services’ Nana Radebe said “When you come across an accident, report it and try to move so that you don’t cause congestion. The spectator effect adds to delays when emergency vehicles try to get to the scene,”
