Imagine yourself enveloped by a mosquito net with nocturnal calls of the lion and hyena stirring your soul and the galaxies highlighting your view. There are a number of safari lodges and camps that have open-air rooms in which you can be soothed to sleep by the sounds of the African bush under the boundless skies.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Greater Kruger

One of the Greater Kruger area’s most iconic sleep outs has to be the Lion Sands Treehouses (Chalkley, Kingston and Tinyeleti) in the Sabi Sand – not only because of the magical experience in itself but also the incredible team that brings it all together.

Inspired by Guy Aubrey Chalkley  who once setup camp in an old tree to escape predators roaming below, Chalkley Treehouse in particular is a secure and luxury platform under African stars with all the comforts that guests would experience at a five star lodge. Think vastness, splendour and luxury.

Through Steadfast Africa, guests are guided to the  treehouse at sunset, where drinks and a picnic dinner await them. The hours of African dusk can be enjoyed relaxing and absorbing the vastness of the bushveld as it transforms from day to night, before turning in for slumber beneath the incredible night sky. *Priced from R3 950 pps plus lodge rates

Doro ! Nawas (the place where rhinos once lived) is in Nambia’s Damaraland which is synonymous with some of Africa’s most spell-binding landscapes. A sleep out here is on your veranda under the starry skies of the Namib and also lulled to sleep by the nocturnal sounds of Africa.

Each chalet at Doro Nawas has a star-bed that can be wheeled out onto your veranda for an incredible evening under a net of constellations.

This entire region is famed for the immense prehistoric volcanic action and home to age old rock paintings and carvings.

Game viewing concentrates on the wildlife found in the riverbed and along the valleys that sometimes fill with water in the rainy season – if you are lucky, you may see the rare desert-adapted elephant or black rhino. *Priced from R4 913 pps
